Hello Beer Fans!
Our Sierra Nevada Beer Dinner on Sunday was really fun and we tasted lots of great beer. The good news for you is that there is tons left over and we will be tapping it all week long. We have Sierra Nevada Flipside Double IPA on tap right now and it is awesome. And we also have some of our Belgian Christmas beers left from Friday. So expect to see lots of great treats all week long on the tap tower. Many of these beers are in 5 gallon kegs so enjoy them while you can. We’ll be opening up early on Wednesday, July 25th and serving breakfast along with coffee, OJ and mimosas starting at 9 am for the first of the US Women’s Olympic soccer games, which is against France. All of the details and more follow…
As just mentioned, we will be opening up early for the US Women’s National Team Olympic Soccer games. The US Ladies have 3 Gold and 1 Silver in the 4 times that women’s soccer has appeared as an Olympic sport. We will be serving up breakfast by Humberto along with coffee, OJ, mimosas and of course great beer starting at 9 am on Wednesday the 25th, Saturday the 28th when the team takes on Colombia and again on Tuesday the 31st when the team closes out group stage play against North Korea. So make plans to join us to cheer on the US and enjoy some great food at the pub. Plan on breakfast being served from 9 am to just after 10 am each of the 3 mornings and then we will switch to our normal menu at 11 am on those days.
All week long you can look forward to new Sierra Nevada beers coming on tap. We have Pale Ale, Torpedo, Flipside Double IPA and Kellerweiss (a hefeweizen) on tap now with the new Sierra/Russian River collaboration Brux in bottles. Coming soon will be Ovila Dubbel, Ovila Quad, Sierra/Dogfish Head Life and Limb 2, Hoptimum double IPA, Hellraiser Knock on Wood (a barrel aged chili chocolate Imperial Stout) and the always popular Bigfoot Barleywine. Keep up to date with what is going on tap and when with Tyson on the Facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/obrienspubsd or via Twitter at: #obrienspubsd.
This Thursday, the 26th we will tap a cask of Green Flash Double Stout with serrano chili peppers. This is a great local stout that is strong at around 8.5%, but not so strong as to really classify as an Imperial Stout. I have never had the chili pepper version, but if it is half as good as the coffee version, we are in for a treat. Also, all of our local draft beers will be on special, as they are every Thursday, starting at just $3.50 a pint – and that is for some truly great beer like AleSmith Nut Brown or Green Flash West Coast IPA.
Friday night the 27th Tyson will be setting up the jockey box to pull out any of the untapped Sierra Nevada beers along with the last of the Christmas beers from last weekend. There will be a lot of great beer on tap on Friday. And if you missed the Christmas in July weekend, coming on Friday will be a great way to make up for it.
Next week you can look forward to a cask of Green Flash 30th Street Pale Ale dry hopped with Simcoe on Wednesday, August 1st as we complete our cycle of Green Flash casks. We’ll be hosting a Firestone Double Barrel Ale “Brothers from the Barrel” Night on Thursday, August 2nd featuring draft DBA, cask DBA fermented 100% in the barrels and Double Double Barrel Ale which is an oak aged 12% alcohol version of DBA that should be awesome. And we’ll feature a few more Firestone beers on Friday the 3rd.
I have been working to get many of my favorite beers at the pub for my annual birthday week party. So far, so good. And while I do not have an exact schedule of when everything will be tapped just yet, I can tell you that it is going to be a very good week. I am going to kick off the celebration with a party not at the pub, but at Eleven on El Cajon Blvd just off the I-805 freeway. On Saturday, August 4th local Pink Floyd cover band Have A Cigar will be playing a special early evening show from 4 to 8 pm for my birthday. Everyone is welcome and there will be great beer on tap and also a full bar. The cover will be $5 which all goes to the band. For more info on the event or Eleven visit: http://www.facebook.com/events/339031379511252/. We will of course have a beer at the pub before the show, and very likely more than one after the show as well back at the pub.
So among the things that you have to look forward to: Alpine’s Toronado 25th Anniversary Double IPA, New Belgium/Alpine Super IPA, Societe Pupil and Apprentice, Sierra Nevada Flipside, Kern River JO IPA, Ballast Point Victory at Sea and Dorado Double IPA (cask and draft), Firestone Parabola, Silva Stout bottles and some special Avery beer. I should have it all sorted next week. The Alpine/Societe/Damn Good Beer Night will be on Friday, August 10th for sure.
In addition to parties at the pub, we’ll be having an event at West Coast Barbecue & Brew in La Mesa on Wednesday, August 8th featuring some Societe beers, Green Flash Double Stout, and a cask of Ballast Point Dorado double IPA among other fantastic brews. And of course, lots of great barbecue. I see yummy beef ribs in my future. Follow the beer news at West Coast by signing up for the email newsletter at: http://westcoastbbqandbrew.com and get updates on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/WestCoastBarbecueBrew. All of the sandwiches at West Coast are now on our signature torta rolls making them even better than before.
Are you ready for some football? Well, something close to football anyway, preseason in the NFL. We have Chargers v. Green Bay on Thursday, August 9th at 5 pm from the Murph. The game is supposed to be on ESPN and I can only hope that the Green Bay fans come to take a vacation here so that this meaningless game will sell out. The final two preseason games are luckily on the road so we should have no problem watching those on Friday, August 24th v. Minnesota and Thursday the 30th against San Francisco. The Chargers’ season opens again as part of a Monday Night Football double header with a 7 pm game against the Raiders in Oakland. Why we always seem to play them week one baffles me. Hopefully we can make it through the game injury free this year. We play Drew Brees and the Saints in week 5. Win the Superbowl and all of a sudden it is the Mercedes Benz Superdome.
The US Men’s National Team plays a not so friendly game against Mexico in Mexico City on Wednesday, August 15th at 5 pm. We have never won in Mexico. World Cup Qualifying will resume on September 7th with another game on the 11th. We wrap up this round on October 12th and 16th. The top two teams in the four team group advance to the final round of qualifying which will start next year.
Later in August we will be hosting a night with the new Rough Draft Brewing Company. And Tyson and I are working on a new type of beer and food tasting that will more resemble some of the local beer and food festivals. Think of it more as a private cocktail party with amazing food and beer stations. We’ll have a sign up sheet at the pub as soon as we confirm our other participants in the tasting. We are shooting for Sunday, August 19th at 6:30 pm. It will be another amazing evening at the pub.
And can you believe we are already mapping out San Diego Beer Week? Get ready for it. We have another round of amazing events coming including a beer dinner with Societe. 542 events got listed on the www.sdbw.org website last year. You can sign up for the SDBW newsletter there as well. So mark the dates for November 2nd to 11th with the SD Brewers Guild Fest taking place on Saturday the 3rd.
That is your good beer news for now. We’ll see you at the pub soon for a great Sierra Nevada beer. Cheers, Tom
