Hello Beer and Food Fans!
We have a fantastic weekend coming up for you at the pub. Look for some great specialty beers from Karl Strauss including a cask of Big Barrel double IPA tonight and an amazing night of Beer and Food this Sunday evening with our good friends from Ballast Point. We have some televised Chargers practices, um I mean pre-season games coming up as well. We’ll feature one of San Diego’s newer breweries, Rough Draft, next week. And that will be followed by a Ballast Point week continuing through Labor Day Weekend.
Beer and Food Fest on Sunday
This Sunday, August 19th we hosting a Beer and Food Tasting featuring the wonderfully diverse beers of Ballast Point. Tyson has come up with a brilliant idea to do more of a beer and food festival rather than a seated beer dinner. We will have multiple food and beer stations around the pub and patio including a cheese station hosted by our longtime friend Mary Palmer of Taste Cheese (expect Mary to have some extra cheese for sale to go as well). We have a mind boggling line up of 17 Ballast Point beers including 2 beers aged in Ballast Point Three Sheets Rum Barrels – Victory at Sea and Three Sheets Barleywine (the rum barrel version is also known as Nine Sheets). Here is a complete list of what you can expect to see us pour at the tasting:
Jalepeno Smokescreen, Fathom IPL, BA Victory (Ballast Point Rum Barrel Aged!!!!), BA Three Sheets (Ballast Point Rum Barrel Aged!!!!), Barmy, Thai Chile Wahoo, Brother Levonian Saison, Winter San Salvador, Guajillo Calico, BA Navigator (Brandy Barrel), Habanero Sculpin, Sculpin IPA, Dorado double IPA, Victory at Sea – 2010 Vintage!!!!, Sour Wench, Calico, Indra Kunindra (Batch 1)
We will have food items coming out throughout the evening each with several recommended beer pairings. The idea is that you can eat and drink what you want so that it has more of a festival-like atmosphere. You know the food front will be amazing. Mary will have 3-4 different cheeses to pair including Mimolette and Ewephoria. Tyson , Lindsey, Humberto, Cesar and our favorite Toronado Islander Nate Soroko will all be working in the kitchen to bring you some incredible tasting experiences.
Among the menu items you can expect are Seared Scallops with a Chipotle Burre Blanc, Indra Kunindra Braised Short Ribs, Beef Cheek Wellington Pops, Hop Salt Cured Salmon, Thai Chili Wahoo Ceviche (it is so insanely good), of course Birthday Bacon and a ton more great savory and sweets. The food will start just after 6:30 and continue until about 8:30 pm with the tasting roughly ending around 9:30 pm. Trust me, there will be plenty of food for everyone (and beer).
The cost for the tasting will be $50 with tax and tip inclusive and you can sign up now at the pub (cash only please). Since we are hosting this event on both the inside of the pub and the patio we can accommodate a much larger group of folks than we could for a normal seated beer dinner. So though we already have 40 people signed up, we expect that we can easily have another 30-35 attend. So while I don’t expect the event to actually sell out, I would certainly recommend signing up before Sunday afternoon to guarantee a spot. This is going to be an evening of great fun that you will not want to miss. And did I mention Rum Barrel Aged Victory at Sea?
We kick off our Karl Strauss weekend at the pub tonight with a cask of Big Barrel double IPA at 5 pm. This massive double IPA is brewed with New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops, the same hops used in Alpine’s Nelson IPA. It is one of Tyson’s favorite beers and we have a huge Karl Strauss crew coming through to drink it up, so be sure to grab a pint while you can. We’ll have a bunch of other Karl Strauss beers on tap all weekend with some hitting the taps tonight. Look for Whistler Imperial Pilsner, Blackball Belgo IPA, Boardwalk Black Rye IPA and Wreck Alley Imperial Stout all on tap along with the award winning Red Trolley Ale. Karl Strauss is not the same brewery they were 10 or even 5 years ago. They have become a very serious player in the local craft beer scene and the quality of their beers and numerous awards speak to that. So for all of you doubters, stop by anytime this weekend and let me change your mind.
As an added bonus for those coming in tonight (Thursday the 16th) we will also have a cask of AleSmith IPA served up for your drinking pleasure. And though the Chargers managed to not sell out their scrimmage with the Cowboys at full regular season price (I know, shocking), the game will still be on TV, just at 9:30 pm on Channel 8 instead of live at 6 pm. Thanks to the Spanos family for screwing over the fans by not even making this practice game available on live tv.
Next weekend we will feature the beers from one of San Diego’s newer breweries – Rough Draft. We have had the brewery’s double IPA Hop Therapy on tap a few times now and it is quite tasty. We’ll start on Thursday with a cask of Eraser IPA, a 7.2% beer with lots of fresh dry hops in the cask. On tap, we will have a full line up of beers from Rough Draft including Frontal Labottleme IPA, Hop Therapy Double IPA, Belgian Vanilla Stout (low abv at 5% and very tasty), Rye Ale, Amber Ale and two Bourbon Barrel aged beers – Embloozlement Tripel and Freudian Sip Strong Ale. The feeling is so far so good with the Rough Draft beers and I am excited to try more of them. Also on the 24th, we get Chargers v. Vikings at 5 pm and since it is an away game, there is now way that the Chargers organization can screw up us seeing it on live tv.
Wednesday, August 29th we will be hosting a Green Flash/St. Feuillien Night as the new Friendship Brew collaboration is released. You might have been there when the St. Feuillien head brewer Alexi was at the pub a few months back – that was when he was out here to brew the beer. Now it is being released and we are honored to be among the first to serve it. Look for lots of Green Flash and St. Fueillien beers on tap both Wednesday and Thursday night.
Starting Friday, August 31st we will be polishing off all of the beers from our massive Food and Beer fest with Ballast Point. With 17 beers to tap that night, there will be lots left over. So look for them on tap as we gear up for Labor Day weekend. We’ll have a cask of AleSmith X on tap on the 30th along with the Chargers final pre-season game at 7 pm against San Francisco. Follow Tyson’s updates on Facebook to see what will be on tap when. And the pub will be CLOSED on Monday, September 3rd for Labor Day so that all of our employees can enjoy the holiday.
Pub Closing Next Tuesday for Lunch
The pub will not open until 4 pm on Tuesday, August 21st so that all of the staff can attend the funeral services for our late pub customer and friend John Brady. The pub will operate normal hours from 4 pm until 11:30 pm the rest of the day. Thank you for your understanding, we all appreciate it. If anyone needs details on the service, please visit: http://www.facebook.com/events/513401178687061/ and you can RSVP there.
We raised over $3500 for charity at John’s wake last Sunday. We are in discussion on how best to use the money, so I will keep you posted after we talk to the charities. If you missed the event, Tiff has posted up some videos of the bag pipers we hired to play on Facebook. You can watch them at: http://www.facebook.com/john.brady.50364, just scroll down to the posts on August 12th. I would like to extend a personal thank you to everyone who has helped honor John’s memory – the love of the O’Brien’s family has been very moving and impressive (and not one bit surprising).
Though the keg of Kern River JO IPA did not make it in time for my birthday, I have been assured that the keg is still coming. The first Thursday of September, the 6th we are going to host a night of cascading casks from Alpine. We’ll have four different 5 gallon casks to tap – two at a time and when one blows we will replace it with a new one so that there will be fresh cask beer all night long. One of the casks will be the Toronado 25th Anniversary double IPA aka Super Nelson and we’ll also have Pure Hop, Duet and Nelson. It will be a great night of Alpine cask beer.
If you missed the incredible Firestone Double Double Barrel Ale at O’Brien’s, we will be tapping a keg next Friday at West Coast Barbecue & Brew in La Mesa. This beer is a double version of the classic Double Barrel Ale that is 100% oak fermented and then aged in Bourbon Barrels for 12 months. It is one of the best Bourbon barrel aged beers I have ever had. We’ll have the great Wookey Jack black double IPA on tap as well. To get all of the updates including news about September’s Green Flash month sign up the email newsletter on the website at: http://westcoastbbqandbrew.com/, or just reply to this email with the word West Coast in the title or subject line.
Thank you to all who helped celebrate my 40th birthday – I had a blast (and lots of great beer). Thank god it won’t happen for another year now. In the next email look for details of our beer dinner with the owner of the Van Steenberge brewery in Belgium in October. We are already gearing up for the pub’s 19th anniversary this January (it will be mine and Lindsey’s 10th Anniversary of owning the pub). We have Alpine and Societe on board to do some anniversary IPA beers for us and Russian River will be doing another TION night in January. And San Diego Beer Week is barely 10 weeks away!
That is your good beer and food news for now. We’ll see you soon for a great San Diego brewed beer! Cheers, Tom
