I am going to try and cram a whole lot of goodness into a short email. Here it goes….
Tonight kicks off our annual Russian River TION Weekend for the pub’s anniversary – we celebrate 21 years of good beer and good cheer in 2015. We will have 19 different Russian River beers on tap and before you think it, Pliny the Younger will not be shipped down to San Diego until the week of February 9th.
We will have 6 non-TION beers including Row 2 Hill 56, Blind Pig IPA and Pliny the Elder – the first time in at least 2 years that we have had all 3 of those beers on tap at the same time. We’ll also have the new STS Pils, Aud Blonde and Dribble Belt Session IPA.
There will be 13 TION beers including 5 Sour/Wild ales – Sanctification, Temptation, Consecration, Supplication and Compunction. One of the last kegs of Mortification from 2012 will be on tap as well. Here is the rest of the TION line up – Rejection, Erudition, Perdition, Defenestration, Salvation, Benediction and Damnation.
All of the beers will be on tap by 5 pm tonight. We will have at least 7 on tap when we open this morning. All but two or three or beers are in full size kegs so I expect to be pouring 15 or more Russian River beers all weekend. From the kitchen today you can enjoy the Nickel BLT and the Nickel BLT Salad along with the Lobster BLT and the very popular Uncle Bob’s Torta.
We will be doing 2 fundraisers tonight at the pub. We have some old tap handles that are no longer in use and we will be offering them for a minimum $5 donation to the Southern California Lupus Foundation. And as a very special treat we will be doing a silent auction for charity featuring a Vinnie Cilurzo-signed Magnum of Batch 1 Supplication. The bidding will start at 5 pm at $100 and will move up in $10 increments. We will close the bidding at 8 pm. We will be accepting cash or credit card payment for the bottle. Every penny from the winning bid will go to Paws and Stripes, which pairs up vets with PTSD with Shelter Dogs to train. For more information or to make a donation, please visit: http://www.pawsandstripes.org/.
Also tonight, I will be on FM 94.9’s Rock and Roll Happy Hour with Matt Akin from Benchmark, Cosimo Sorrentino from Monkey Paw and local beer writer Brandon Hernandez to discuss the Beer to the Rescue campaign to raise awareness of Lupus. We’ll be drinking the new Nickel Double Dubbel Belgian-style Quad for the very first time. Read on for details of when the beer will be poured at the pub.
Superbowl Potluck Party
Not only will Sunday be day 3 of our epic Russian River TION weekend, but I hear there is an American Football championship game at 3:30 pm between the Patriots of New England and the Seahawks of Seattle. We will be hosting a potluck party for the Superbowl from 2-7 pm. The kitchen will be open until around kick off at 3:30 pm and then we are letting the cooks go so that they too can go watch the game.
Next Friday, February 6th we will be doing a fundraiser night for the Southern California Lupus Foundation as part of the Beer To The Rescue Campaign organized by Brandon Hernandez who was diagnosed with Lupus last year. Brandon and I collaborated on the Double Dubbel Quad and we will be debuting it at the pub on the 6th at 5 pm. We’ll also be pouring a keg of Nickel Tripp’s Tripel and Benchmark’s Hildegard Triple IPA that was also brewed for the Beer To The Rescue campaign. The campaign will run all year with more than a dozen local breweries involved and beers released throughout the year. For more information, check out: https://www.facebook.com/beertotherescue. And if all goes as planned, we will be doing an Adobada Torta on the 6th.
On Thursday the 12th we will be remembering our good friend Charlie Gow who passed away last year. I could think of no better way to honor Charlie’s memory than to brew a very hoppy double IPA. Charlie was a beer writer, beer judge and all around great guy who was a true friend to the pub. So in his honor I made Gowabunga Double IPA. The beer is still in the fermentor right now but it has great flavor from the use of Columbus, Simcoe, Mosaic and Cascade hops.
I feel fortunate that Charlie was able to join us in 2013 at Sierra Nevada to brew O’Bryen’s 20th Anniversary Ale and we will also be putting on some kegs of that beer on the 12th. All who knew Charlie are invited to come by the pub and raise a glass to him. We’ll be tapping the Gowabunga around 1 pm on Thursday the 12th and we’ll have a cask of it on at 5 pm. I will have more details to post on the Facebook page as we get closer to the 12th.
Finally, our next Sunday night beer dinner will be with Nickel Beer on the 22nd at 6:30 pm. There is a sign sheet behind the bar. Cost is $50 (cash only please) with tax and tip inclusive. This is going to be a good one and we will be serving lots of specialty beer for the dinner including the rum barrel aged barleywine.
That is your good beer news for now. We’ll see you soon for a fantastic Russian River beer. Cheers, Tom
