Hello Beer Fans,
It is one of my favorite times of the year – hop harvest. And that means fresh hop beers made with hops picked right off the vines and used before they are dried. San Diego has a small but growing hop farm community. We have teamed up with the San Diego Hop Growers Association (http://www.sdhga.org/) to bring you a weekend of San Diego hopped beers on September 11, 12 and 13. The hop harvest in San Diego happens earlier than the hop harvest in the northwest where most of the country’s hops are grown. And while we will be doing our regular Wet Hop Festival on October 16, 17 and 18, we just couldn’t wait to tap all of the delicious locally hopped brews this year.
We are expecting more than 15 beers brewed with San Diego grown hops from Mexico to Temecula with lots of San Diego breweries in there. Look for information on the Facebook page as we continue to confirm the line up (https://www.facebook.com/obrienspubsd). We are expecting beers from Culture, Insurgente, Chuckalek, Iron Fire, Monkey Paw, South Park Brewing, Nickel and several others. The plan is to tap the beers on Friday and pour them through the weekend. We’ll have members of the San Diego Hop Growers Association there on Saturday the 12th from roughly 1-5 pm to talk hops and answer questions about growing hops in San Diego. Don’t miss this one a year chance to taste this delicious wet hopped beers.
Tonight, Thursday the 3rd, we’ll be tapping a cask of double dry hopped Mosaic Session Ale from Karl Strauss at 5 pm. We’ll also have a keg of Nickel Wholly CRAB! Apple Pie Ale on tap made with 100% Transcendent Crab Apples from Julian. The beer takes on a very pleasant tartness from the highly acidic crab apples.
And we have the last Chargers preseason game tonight at 7 pm vs. the San Francisco 49’ers. The Chargers will begin the regular season on Sunday the 13th at 1 pm with a game against the Lions.
Tomorrow night we’ll be tapping 5 beers from Noble Ale Works in Anaheim including Naughty Sauce (golden coffee stout) and Man’s Milk. And the USA will play Peru in a friendly tomorrow at 4 pm. We’ll be showing Germany v. Poland in a UEFA 2016 qualifier at lunch at 11:45 am.
We will be CLOSED on Monday the 7th for Labor Day. We will be open regular hours the rest of the weekend – Friday and Saturday until 1 am and Sunday until at least 6 pm. Look for the kitchen to run our tasty beer battered fish specials on Saturday and Sunday this weekend. And of course Friday is Torta Day with the Roast Beef and Chicken Tortas both on special.
Also on Saturday you will find Tyson at Bacon Fest making up a Brulee of Bacon paired with Nickel Borrego Dark Sky Vanilla Oatmeal Stout. The four bacon extravaganza will be held at Liberty Station from 1-5 pm. Full details can be found at: http://www.sdbaconfest.com/
Next week the USA will play Brazil at 5 pm on Tuesday the 8th. During the day we’ll be showing England v. Switzerland at 11:45 am on Tuesday along with Macedonia v. Spain.
I am going to keep this short and end there. I hope to see you next weekend for a great San Diego hopped beer. Cheers, Tom
