Hello Hoppy Beer Fans!
This is going to be a weekend of hop overload at O’Brien’s – no, I mean even more than usual. We have tons of super strong IPAs to tap including the very rare Pliny the Younger. Though it is not as if hops is all that there will be. The Beachwood Holy Smoke is on tap and we still have some great dark beers on as well as Redstone meads and the Redstonewall Stout blend. And tonight we debut the O’Briens’ 22nd Anniversary beer from Abnoraml which is highly drinkable ESB-ish style beer. We’ll have it on cask and draft this evening starting at 5 pm.
We are kicking off a new late night Industry Hoppy Hour this week with $15 pitchers of beer from 10 pm till Close Tuesday thru Saturday. We will still have our regular pitcher special every Monday night running from 4:30 pm till Close. As part of the late night Hoppy Hour any of beers served in pitchers will be just $15 – up to $5 off the regular price. The other added advantage of stopping by after 9 pm is that there is actually parking around the pub, which I know can be a hassle. We are working on some ideas to help open up more parking spaces around the pub, particularly during the 11 am to 6 pm hours.
Friday the 19th we kick off a Bell’s Brewing Company weekend with the release of Hopslam. We will have a great selection of Bell’s brews including Expedition Stout, Two Hearted IPA, Lager of Lakes and Smitten Golden Rye. Hopslam will be on by 5 pm on Friday. In addition to all of those great beers, and just because we can, we’ll be tapping a keg of Monkey Muriqui – another amazing strong hoppy ale brewed right here in San Diego that took the silver medal at the Bistro Double IPA Festival in the Triple IPA category.
Tonight, Thursday the 18th, we will start to sell tickets for our annual Charity Keg of Russian River’s Pliny the Younger. We will tap the Charity keg at 5 pm on Wednesday the 24th and the only way to get a glass will be to sign up in advance. 100% of the money will go to animal related charities around town. We will be selling 10 oz glasses for $20 each with a limit of 2 per person. The tickets will go on sale at 4:30 pm on Thursday the 18th. This will guarantee you a glass on Wednesday the 24th with no lines to wait in.
On Saturday we will tap a keg of Societe Roustabout when we open at 11:30 am. This is another incredible locally brewed hoppy strong ale that you should enjoy. At 4:30 pm on Saturday we will tap our first keg of Pliny the Younger at 4:30 pm. As soon as it blows, we will tap the El Segundo Power Plant which was the GOLD MEDAL Triple IPA at the Bistro Double IPA Festival. Figure the Power Plant will be on tap by 5 pm.
The pub is going to be CLOSED on Sunday, February 21st for our Employee Party. Look for West Coast Barbecue and Brew in La Mesa to be open all day as well as Nickel Beer Company in Julian.
Next week will have a cask of Got Nelson IPA from Thorn Street on Thursday the 25th. We’ll tap a couple of beers from the new Bitter Brothers including an IPA and a Session IPA. Our beer dinner with Benchmark is sold out, but we will have plenty of great Benchmark Beer on tap the week of February 29th including the massively strong Hildegard Triple IPA. For you lunch regulars, make plans to stop by on Tuesday as we will have another keg of Pliny the Younger on tap at 11 am when we open. There will also be UEFA Champions League games on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
Looking ahead a little bit we will be part of another Flight on Convoy on Tuesday March 1st with Abnormal Brewing and Nickel Beer Company. There will be beers from both breweries at Soho, Common Theory and Shangai Saloon and of course O’Brien’s. Look for Nickel Devil’s Copper, Filthy Paws Porter an Apple Pie Ale on tap at the other pubs. At O’Brien’s we will have a selection of Nickel Barrel Aged beers including Kupfernickel Barleywine, Stonewall Stout and the Double Dubbel Animal Style (rum barrel aged Belgian-style Quad). I believe all of the beers will be on tap at 4 pm on the 1st and I plan to stop by all 4 pubs that evening.
We have tons of other great beer events lined up for March and April. Our next Sunday night pairing will be on March 13th with Rip Current. It is going to be a beer and cheese tasting with some beer inspired dishes to be served as well. We are planning on three cheese courses and three cheese themed dishes with our usual 6-8 beers. The cost will be $40 (cash only please) and the tickets will be on sale starting Monday, February 22nd.
We’ll have lots of great stouts on tap around St. Patrick’s Day next month. And we have another 3 Amigos Night in the works with Bagby, Lost Abbey and Nickel Beer. Another Founders Brewing event is in the works along with a Ballast Point Victory at Sea Weekend and a flight of Nickel Apple Pie Ale versions including the Sour Apple Pie Ale.
That is your good beer news for now. We’ll see you soon for a fantastic Triple IPA. Cheers, Tom
